GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
The last week I give win10 (latest vers.) a try and want to share my experience for anyone who is interrested.
At first my sytem specs: all custom watercooled
Core i7 at 4,8ghz HT off
16gb ram
2x GTX 970 sli
SB XFi
2x ssd
4x hdd
Windows 8.1 x64 with classic shell. It's the fastest OS for my system, around 3-5% faster as win7 x64.
Ok now, clean install of win10, all latest drivers, removed all uneeded programs. Renamed my GTR2 folder and made a fresh install of GTR2 with update. Then deleted the fresh install and renamed my GTR2 back, run the config tool and start gtr2 as admin. GTR2 started and worked fine. Closed it and set my parameters in nvidia inspector. I use vsync with 50 frame/sec, 8x msaa with 8x sgss. Started GTR2 again and all seems to run well. Now I started my benchmark - all settings at max, Barcelona with 10 EEC GT3 opponents 2pm no rain, spot view max zoomed out. On grid walk and start I get massive stutters with around 30 frames and my two gtx have 100% utilization! After the start the fps goes to 50 and the gtx ut. to around 50%. A realy bad performance. Under Win8.1 the utilization is ~30% with absolute stable 50fps. Now I began the search for this big differene. At first I tried a lot of other nvidia drivers. The best result gave me the 368.39, the last one befor implementing the GTX 1000 series, with a performance increase of ~10%, not realy what I want. Now running the win 10 troubleshooter and he says compatblity mode WinXP/sp2. This was now the best performance I'm getting in Win10. The utilizations of my GTX was ~75-40% with low stutters at gridwalk and start. I also tried it without sound but no difference. It seems that my two GTX 970 does not work as good as in Win8.1
Final conclusion: I will stay at Win 8.1 . Absolute no problem, I like it I was only curious about Win 10.
This must not reflect other systems. It could be that single cards work better, particuler cards of the 1000 series. SLI support is to die. Nvidia says no sli with the 4xx drivers. We will see...

I have had a similar experience too. I now have Win 8.1 back loaded as my OS so I anticipate a much better experience than I have had in the 2+yrs fighting with Win 10 to remain stable.

I have no Issues with it, probably because I use the 10th Anniversary patch

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
The patch have nothing to do with it. I tried this also with no difference. I think the problem is that the nvidia drivers get no more optimations for directx 9. As I said the game run without any problem but with bad performance. Could be that a gtx1080ti or the new 2080 have so much power to compensate this but the price for this is much to high for me and I realy did not need Win10. I found nothing that makes me say "wow I need this". If it runs well for you then it is fineDexter249 wrote:I have no Issues with it, probably because I use the 10th Anniversary patch

+1 What you say is identical to my experience. It runs okay, just not nearly as well as it did plus the XD map doesn't work in Win 10.

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
GTR² runs best in admin mode, without usercontrol under win10.
But it runs very good and smooth under Win10 x64. XD and map plugin is also working.
Running SweetFX, Map and xp together is a little tricky, but possible.
You know about the age of GTR2...
Very old software on new Hardware and operating systems are always tricky... but mostly possible...

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
I bought my PC two years ago with 8.1. Microsoft insisted on "giving away" Windows 10 ...
As Windows and gift are words that do not fit the same sentence, I decided to stay with version 8.1.
I asked a friend who works at Microsoft for the reason of the "gift", but he laughed without answering me, so I drew my own conclusions ...

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
Thanks for the info. Sounds like WIn10 works for some but not others? It's good to know as I'll need to upgrade from 7 at some point.
You should try disabling SLI and see what happens. I spent 3 generations on SLI (460, 660, 970) before I gave up due to SLI just not being optimized or supported properly. And it brings in new new issues you don't have to deal with in single card solutions. I now take the advice I heard years ago 'never go sli when you can buy an equal single card solution'.

How did you get the map to work? It caused a ctd whenever I tried to use it with Win 10 and I wasn't using SweetFX either

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
Today I tried out disabeling sli. The performance was the same bad as with sli enabled. So it seems sli with directx 9 is not working. Then I made a last try with the latest 399.07 driver (befor I used 398.82). I was not able to get GTR2 starting. In trace file it writes "CUBE error : Error setting video mode 1920 x 1080 x 6". Tried different settings, also windowd mode, but no luck. So I end this because I will not spend any more time fiddeling around with win 10. I was only courios about it. In some years when I need a new grafic card I will give it the next try

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
Are you enabling all cpu cores with somethinglike Bill's Process manager or Process Lasso?
You definitely won't get full performance without that.

Yes, I use Prifinity 2 for this to automatically set the affinity masks.

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
I have a working map plugin on w10 but not the XD plugin.
[You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] Could you explain me how did you successfully do it?
I have installed the directX9 from Microsoft's site, i followed the instructions in AlbertSebastian's post here: [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.]
But after all of these attempts the xd doesn't work.

That's exactly reversed to my experience. This is why I detest Win 10. Seems it's very different from 1 user to another and often doesn't react the same way twice.

I've not heard of either before but as far as I am aware I had taken the steps to utilize all cores. It's been so long ago now I forget how or what I used to do so. I'm going to look into these 2 things you mentioned. Thanks for the tip.shovas wrote:Are you enabling all cpu cores with somethinglike Bill's Process manager or Process Lasso?

Tomorrow, saturay, when I am at home, I will send you my files. Small package... you will only have to write your name in the config...

Thank you! I just couldn't deal with the stock FFB so I had to tune it myself and I was pleasantly surprised at just how good GTR2 FFB can be!
Personally I feel the FIA GT 2005 mod with my FFB feels the best. The FFB params were tweaked and GTR233 and the authors worked on a new tire model and together they feel great. Try Silverstone it just feels nice.

I'm just curious if you ever tried the long ago suggested "Best feeling ffb for G27" guide?

XD and Map Plugin together in GTR²
This is my working config today for XD AND map plugin together. Please try it, hope it will be working at your system.
And as always: Do not forget to backup before you change things.
Please follow these steps:
Download the archive at mediafire.
First extract the archive in a new folder, then you have to edit the lines in \Plugins\Map\Mapconf.txt AND \Plugins\CarSetup\CarSetupconf.txt
"DriverName = GLe - replace the Name "GLe" with your own GTR² profile name and save.
Then put all files to your GTR² folder and replace originals (maybe make a backup before doing this).
FYI - there is no XD.ini in the folder, because this file is generated at first start... maybe you can use your own xd.ini file.
The "Mapconf.txt" also contains the coordinates where the map is onscreen and the lookalike.
My suggestion:
-play GTR² in "XP SP3" compatibility mode for best results under Win10
-start GTR² with admin rights
...and plaese excuse my bad english!
Respect and all credits for the makers of these plugins.

No link anymore - does not working for kk08... Map Plugin and XD you can find - use please use google[/url]

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
Bad news Gle. Using your files my game doesn't start. Your files weren't different from what I tried. I've read somewhere that Windows has started to not support dx9 games few years ago. Probably I have a newer windows 10 version that can't work.
Thank you for trying to help.

Re: GTR2 at Windows 10 - my story
Hmmm - really bad. Was just a try.
But nope - that cant be your windows version.
Have the most actual Win10x64 with all available updates, GeForce GTX1080TI, 16gb ddr4-3400
Working perfektly with gtr2! All of my simracing friends doing the same way without problems and different hardware, but all on Win10... - not better, but not worse than with the Windows versions before.
Must be a problem in your software install, driver version,dx version or anything else of that kind; because it is working fine together.
Sorry for you!
