Help with start making skins.

Hello,
I'm new in this forum, but I would like to start making skins. Does anyone have any advice at the beginning?
Which program is the best for it?

possible ways to do it with painting programmes like Photoshop or Gimp. I don't have experience with the last one, but it's free to use.

Photoshop's better. Gimp isn't as intuitive, but perfectly workable. I used Gimp for years and changed to photoshop and.................to be honest I'm so used to gimp i keep going back to it for easy things.

Finished skins are .DDS files and it used to be that you had to download a special app for GIMP. I hear now this isn't the case............which is great news.

You'll probably need Geditor too, to break up the .GTR files so you can work on them.

Not sure if it works but there's a good tutorial for Race07, it works more or less the same.

I try use it and I think that soon I will be able to send a test skin here (if everything goes well)

I download the template for Porsche 997 GT3 R and did this random skin, I saved it as .dds file but I don't know how to add it to the game.

You have to copy a .car file from a working car. If you open it with text editor, you will see the lines (usually placed at the bottom): Manufacturer, Driver, Driver1, Driver2, Team, Number and Classes.

Edit Driver, Driver1, Driver2, Team and Number as you want. Then remember the content of Manufacturer and Number.

The Number format is YYXXXzz where YY is the year, XXX is a 3 letters number e.g. 001 for #1 and zz is an optional couple of characters.
If you don't respect this format the skin could not work.

Now rename your .car file to match your number and rename your skin Number_Manufacturer_body1.dds

Now if you put the two files in a folder and put it inside game's file structure, the magic should be done...

You should learn a lesson about the lines Classes and Genstring but I think this is enough as first lesson.

Looks really nice for a first skin. Always smart to start simple. Biggest thing i will say is to always organize your layers. I remember starting out i always just added layer after layer and not naming or organizing anything and if i needed to change anything it took me forever to find it.
