Imagine a GT racing championship getting the same all encompassing treatment as F1 gets in its own games. That’s what happened for two glorious, fleeting years in the mid 2000s with the GTR games. GTR 2 in particular was a revelation, fettling a handling model that showed enormous potential in the first game into the most authentic and demanding racing experience around. There’s a reason why there’s still a rabid fan base holed up playing this game today.
What’s more, the game’s garage was populated by cars from the full-fat era of GT racing, where Ferrari 550 Maranellos diced with Maserati MC12s in the GT1 class and where a cross-eyed Morgan Aero 8 GTN was still an acceptable steed for an assault on the Spa 24 hours.
The Spa 24, incidentally, is where all the game’s numerous systems come together in concert, multi-class racing plus dynamic time-of-day and weather make the enduro a real occasion, even if you compress the whole thing into just 24 minutes. Technically uncompromising PC sim racing at its very best.

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
It really is a special game/sim. It really does tilt me when I see this new breed of simracers that completely ignore it only because of the dated graphics engine. There's so much more to it than the graphics.

I have to agree with you about fact that it is dated but...
With all it's faults and limitations that game is still best racing game of all times if you look at the games as a whole package/experience.
Yes some other (read as newer) games are better in some aspects but that usually mean only one aspect ( or 2 in best cases) and suck big time in all other.

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
Well duh... of course it's dated. And for that matter so is rFactor, GSCE, and Automobilista. They all use some form of ISI's gMotor engine which traces it's roots back to SCGT (1999).
And just because it's dated, makes it no less of a good game. It rightly deserves to be in the Top 10 for what it does. Working Day/Night cycle, multi-class AI racing, and dynamic weather. Which some racing titles back in 2006, never even had!

Not to mention the grid sizes GT and forza were still running 8 car grids for races!
nothing like the old 8 car enduro race

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
Yeah, except that AMS has waay more sophisticated physics, much better online and a lot more intelligent AI (although rF has already were better in these). And i didn't mentonied the graphics as it isn't that important for a sim.Crimson764 wrote:Well duh... of course it's dated. And for that matter so is rFactor, GSCE, and Automobilista. It WAS one of the best if not the best, years ago. I liked it very much and i thought i'll never stop playing with it. But actually even after GSCE and AMS i changed my mind but especially after rF2. It is much better in every single aspect and actually makes the GTR2 bad.

Cmon guys...again this shit ?
You know it´s going to end in everybody being butt-hurt again, so just stop this discussion on what is the better sim.
I appreciate them all , they all have their good and bad sides, but thats not stopping me from enjoying them.

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
Preferences I guess, to me rF2 is superior in every aspect be it for online or offline. It lacks a in game championship option for now the rF2LA does it good enough.Scorpyo wrote:Kalinin wrote:it's not only about dated graphics it's dated everything.... even the coding part

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
AMS is great and the work done on physics engine is very nice (overall still behind rF2 tho) but it got its limits mostly due to being 32bit app and Reiza got way too close to this limit IMO. Its AI is decent but in the end of the day it's a fine tuned AI that you can also find in good AIWs/mods from rF/GTR2, it lacks stuff like rejoin for online races for example and has no resume races if you want to do something longer offline.
It is a great game, but having rF2 being sold to a new company with bigger budget and workforce with nice plans for the future for sure makes you give another look at how things go. Especially when the man that now owns rF2 is the person that helped to make AMS what it is now, built the rF1 rejoin plugin and also built one that allows you to easily resume a race in case of mass disconnect.
Tho you know it's simracing, don't be a fanboy of anything, things can change (or just not happen)
I think if AMS was 64bit we wouldn't look at something else for now

None of us would be here if it weren't for GTR2.
And there ends my opinion about GTR2.

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
How is Grand Prix World Circuit not number 1....
Loved that game as a kid.. 200kmh in the pitlane still make the pitbox and guy in shorts and t-shirt greets you with about 6 different tyre choices, awesome.
Matt.

Re: Top Gear - Top 50 driving games
GTR2 rightfully has a place in that top ten. It's still one of the best sims ever made, it has lots of mods, it runs sweetly on low-spec computers and it is cheap. Anyone who likes simracing and hasn't tried it is missing out.
