Question about Steam key

Last weekend I bought the SimBin Mega Bundle via Steam so I finally got hold of a legal copy of GTR2, but the Steam version has a lot of complications and of course some mods like PnG require a whole new install. Can I use my Steam key to activate a hard copy version of GTR2?

BTW this was posted at NoGrip as well, and I didn't get an answer there, probably because I said I had a warez version of GTR2 and they're too anal about it.

No you can not. You can activate it outside of Steam and then add it to your library if you happen to have a key, but the Steam key will not work in place of whatever Simbin's keygen algorithm is. The Steam version is complicated at first but after you update and do the No CD patch it works exactly the same as a hard copy. You can even move it out of the Steam folder and start it without Steam.

normally u can drive gtr2 without any key, the key is just for use on online races...

so u can install it where u like and if u dont register online u have no need for the key...

No, you don't need to put it in.

Also, I'm looking at GTR2's installation method specifically, and there should be no reason the key Steam gives you won't work with a hard copy. I'd give it a shot; if it doesn't work then we know Steam products have unique keygens.
